Canine Psychology

Now that the kids are back in school, let's not forget the pets that they played with all summer. Dogs particularly are social animals and need fairly constant contact with familiar humans or other animals. Dogs can become depressed and suffer from separation anxiety when their summertime buddies suddenly return to school. This depression can make a dog go off its feed. When an animal is not eating well, it becomes susceptible to diseases such as pneumonia or diarrhea.

To prevent the depression, spend some time with the dog daily at feeding time. Just a few minutes a day will give the dog the assurance that it has not been abandoned by its buddy. This time spent with the dog benefits the child emotionally as well as the dog. Studies have shown that time spent with a pet relieves stress and lowers blood pressure. Remember that time spent at school can be just as stressful on a child as a day on the job can be to an adult. So, give your pet a hug today and both of you will benefit.
